If you work in an office, it’s really vital that you have the right office chair. It may be unfortunate for our growing waistlines that much of our work is sedentary these days but this doesn’t mean that you should settle for a chair that is sub-standard.
When Your Chair Makes You Feel Bad
Despite legislation around occupational health and safety laws, it is not uncommon for workplaces to feature office chairs that are not really up to the job. The ideal office chair should be physically supportive with an emphasis on spinal support. Unfortunately, many such chairs are uncomfortable to sit in for long periods of time and may even cause long-lasting damage including back aches and pains and other chronic or acute musculo-skeletal problems.
In fact, we may not even realise that the office chairs we are sitting in for most of the week are causing any problems at all. This is because postural and spinal problems of this nature often build up over time. The wrong office chair can cause muscle weakness and poor posture to the extent that it needs to be managed through a physical therapist or chiropractor.
Finding the Right Chair for Your Workplace
If you are in a place of work where the office chairs are causing you some serious physical issues, it is important that you speak out and make the problem known to management as soon as possible. The best way to approach this potentially serious issue is directly, but with an understanding that management may need to time to find a solution. Rather than approach them with a negative attitude, it is important to approach with an attitude that it is a problem that can be solved easily.
It is also important to remember that the solution need not be overly expensive. Though there are a wide range of office chairs on sale at any given moment both online and offline, not every model will be the best fit for you. In fact, it may be wise for the employer to contract the services of a third party who can evaluate the workplace and the movements of employees and then come up with a solution that presents an ergonomic refit of the office for everyone.
Finding a Better Solution
Given just how much time many of us spend sitting down in our places of work, it is important that the time spent in these areas is as comfortable as possible. What is important to remember, though, is that no furniture solution is perfect. Sitting down for any long period of time will inevitably create physical problems for us and so it is just as important to practice good habits at work as much as possible including regular breaks, regular stretching exercises, and time away from the office chair walking or standing.
If you are suffering from back pains, they may be due to the chair you sit in at work. If this is the case, you may need to seek a solution and look for an office chair that is well-suited to your body type and the length of time that you spend at work.
